Law Firm SEO for Chicago Attorneys

People looking for a lawyer search with questions first and call second. I get firms into the map pack, the organic results and the AI answers those questions now trigger, with pages that answer them better than a directory can.

What Law Firm SEO Has to Win in 2026

Law firm SEO is the work of getting a firm chosen at the moment someone needs a lawyer: the three-firm map pack, the organic results under it, and the AI Overview that now answers the questions people ask first. Each practice area is its own search market, and personal injury in the Loop competes very differently from estate planning in Oak Park.

Look at a real Chicago search. In the Ahrefs snapshot of Google's results for "chicago personal injury lawyer", pulled October 1, 2026, the page opened with a three-firm map pack, then one firm's organic listing, then a People Also Ask box with questions like "How much do personal injury lawyers charge in Illinois?" A Super Lawyers directory page held position 4 with a domain rating of 88, while the firms in positions 5 through 10 had domain ratings between 27 and 41. Authority alone did not decide that page.

AI answers are already part of legal search. In my September 2026 study of 3,804 US searches, 53.6% of legal searches showed a Google AI Overview, and searches phrased as questions showed one 86.4% of the time across all 10 industries I measured. Firms that answer those questions on their own site, clearly and specifically, give the overview something to cite.

Where Firms Lose Clients in Search

Five problems I find on most law firm sites, in rough order of how much business they cost.

  • Practice area pages that read like a brochure

A page that says "experienced and aggressive" answers nothing. Pages that explain fees, timelines, deadlines to file and what to bring to a consultation get read, ranked and quoted.

  • A Business Profile in the wrong category

Personal injury attorney, criminal justice attorney and family law attorney are separate Google categories. The primary one decides which map searches you can win.

  • Directories outranking the firm

Super Lawyers and similar directories rank because they are thorough and trusted. A firm beats them with a better page for its own city and practice area, and keeps its directory profiles accurate because AI engines read them too.

  • No answers for the questions people ask first

The People Also Ask box is a list of what clients want to know before they call. Each question deserves a direct, accurate answer on your site.

  • Intake that leaks after the click

A slow site, a form with nine fields or a phone number buried in the footer loses the client after you already won the search.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does law firm SEO take?
Map pack changes from Business Profile work often show in 4 to 8 weeks. Practice area pages in competitive Chicago markets like personal injury usually take 6 to 12 months to reach page one. Less contested practice areas move faster.
Can a small firm outrank legal directories?
Yes, for its own city and practice area. In the Ahrefs snapshot of Google's results for chicago personal injury lawyer pulled October 1, 2026, firms with domain ratings between 27 and 41 held positions 5 through 10 next to a directory with a domain rating of 88. Specific, local pages do the work.
Do AI Overviews show up for legal searches?
Often. In my September 2026 study of 3,804 US searches, 53.6% of legal searches showed a Google AI Overview. Searches phrased as questions showed one 86.4% of the time across all 10 industries I measured.
Who writes the content, and who checks it?
I research and write it, and an attorney at your firm reviews every page before it publishes. That keeps the legal detail accurate and the pages in your firm's voice.
Do you work with firms outside Chicago?
Yes. I am based in Chicago, but the work runs remotely and I take firms anywhere in the US.
