Healthcare and Dental SEO for Chicago Practices
Patients now read an AI answer before they ever see your website. I get dental offices, specialists and clinics into Google Maps, the organic results and those AI answers, so the next new-patient call goes to you.
Working in Chicago search since 2004. 5.0 on Google. Serving the city and the suburbs.

What Healthcare SEO Covers for a Practice
Healthcare SEO is the work of making a medical or dental practice the obvious choice when a nearby patient searches for care: the map pack for "dentist near me", the organic result for "dental implants cost", and the AI Overview that now sits above both. For a practice, each of those is a booked appointment or a lost one.
Health searches are where AI answers show up most. In my September 2026 study of 3,804 US searches, 97.4% of health searches showed a Google AI Overview, the highest of the 10 industries I measured. A patient asking about a root canal or a colonoscopy prep will usually read Google's summary first, and that summary cites a handful of pages. Your treatment pages need to be among them.
The map still decides who gets the call. For a suburban Chicago gastroenterology practice I track, the Naperville office ranked in the Google Maps top 3 at 120 of 121 points on an 11 by 11 grid for "gastroenterologist" (Local Falcon, August 26, 2025), with an average map rank of 1.23. That is what owning a local market looks like, and it is the standard I work toward for every practice.
Where Practices Lose New Patients in Search
Most of the patients a practice never hears from were lost at one of these five points.
A Business Profile that undersells the practice
Wrong primary category, missing services, no insurance or accessibility details, and photos from years ago. Google uses all of it to decide who shows in the map.
One location page doing the work of several
A practice with offices in Naperville and Plainfield needs a real page for each, with its own doctors, hours, parking and directions. One generic page cannot rank in two towns.
Treatment pages that answer nothing
Thin pages that repeat "best dentist" do not get quoted in AI Overviews. Pages that explain cost, recovery time and who is a good candidate, in plain language, do.
Reviews that stop arriving
Review count and recency affect map rankings. A simple ask after every visit, built into the front desk routine, works better than any review software.
A site AI crawlers cannot read
Booking widgets and pages that only render in JavaScript can hide your services from Google and from AI crawlers. I check what each crawler actually sees.
How Often Google Shows an AI Overview, by Industry
From my study of 3,804 US searches with a Google results snapshot on or after August 1, 2026 (Ahrefs data, September 2026). Health is first by a wide margin.
| Industry | Searches with an AI Overview |
|---|---|
| Health | 97.4% |
| Software | 87.5% |
| Finance | 78.4% |
| Careers and education | 70.6% |
| Travel and food | 69.1% |
| Marketing | 66.1% |
| Consumer products | 65.2% |
| Legal | 53.6% |
| Industrial B2B | 53.5% |
| Home services | 42.4% |

How I Work With a Practice
01
Map the patient searches
I pull the searches patients use in your area, by service and by town, and check where you appear today in Google Maps, the organic results and AI Overviews.
02
Fix the profile and the location pages
Categories, services, hours, photos and one strong page per office. This is usually the fastest win.
03
Write the treatment pages patients ask about
Cost, recovery, insurance and candidacy questions answered in plain language, with a doctor at the practice reviewing anything clinical before it goes live.
04
Measure every month
Map grids for your top services, Search Console clicks and AI Overview citations, reported in plain English.
Healthcare Work, With Numbers
97.4% of health searches showed a Google AI Overview in my September 2026 study of 3,804 US searches.
120 of 121 map points in the Google Maps top 3 for "gastroenterologist" at a suburban Chicago practice's Naperville office (Local Falcon, August 26, 2025).
9,000+ pharmacy locations covered by an enterprise local SEO program I worked on.
Grid: 11 by 11 points over a 5 mile radius. Practice and enterprise client names withheld.
Practices I Work With
Dental offices, orthodontists, oral surgeons, specialty clinics and medical groups with a few offices in Chicago and the suburbs, plus practices elsewhere in the US that want one senior person doing the work. If you run many offices, the system on my multi-location SEO page is the better fit.
I am a good fit if you want to own your local market and you are willing to answer patient questions on your site in real detail. I am a poor fit if you want a monthly report full of rankings for terms no patient searches.
