Home Services SEO for Chicago Contractors
When a pipe bursts or a storm hits, homeowners pick from the three businesses Google shows on the map. I get roofers, plumbers, HVAC companies, remodelers and other home service businesses into those three spots, and into the searches people make before the emergency.
Working in Chicago search since 2004. 5.0 on Google. Serving the city and the suburbs.

What Home Services SEO Does for a Contractor
Home services SEO is the work of getting a contractor called first when someone nearby needs the job done: the Google Maps pack, the organic results for searches like "water heater replacement cost", and the AI answers that now appear on some of them. For most home service businesses, the map is where the phone calls come from.
The map matters more here than almost anywhere. In my September 2026 study of 3,804 US searches, home service searches showed a Google AI Overview 42.4% of the time, the lowest of the 10 industries I measured, against 68.7% across all industries. Searches with local intent showed one only 23.4% of the time. A homeowner looking for a roofer is still looking at the map pack, the reviews and a phone number.
I run this at scale for a national pool builder client with 70 locations, each with its own Business Profile work, local page and tracking. The same playbook works for a one-truck plumber in Ravenswood, with less of it.
Where Contractors Lose the Call
Five things that keep good contractors out of the map pack.
A service area Google does not believe
Listing 40 suburbs in your profile does not make you rank in them. Your address, your reviews and real pages for the towns you serve do.
One page that says "we do it all"
A page for each job you want more of, with what it costs, how long it takes and what a homeowner should check, ranks and converts better than one long list.
Reviews that mention nothing
Reviews that name the job and the town help you rank for that job in that town. Ask for them right after the work is done.
A phone number that is hard to tap
Most home service searches happen on a phone. A tap-to-call number at the top of every page and a short form win calls that a slow, cluttered page loses.
Growth into new towns without a plan
Opening a second location or widening the service area needs pages, profiles and tracking in place before the trucks arrive.
The Map Still Decides Home Service Searches
How often Google showed an AI Overview, from my September 2026 study of 3,804 US searches.
| Searches | Showed an AI Overview |
|---|---|
| Home service searches | 42.4% |
| Searches with local intent, all industries | 23.4% |
| All searches, all 10 industries | 68.7% |
| Searches phrased as a question, all industries | 86.4% |

Map grids for the jobs that matter, plus calls and form fills, reported in plain English.
Home Services Work, With Numbers
70 locations run on one local SEO playbook for a national pool builder client.
42.4% of home service searches showed a Google AI Overview in my September 2026 study, the lowest of the 10 industries I measured.

Businesses I Work With
Roofers, plumbers, HVAC companies, electricians, remodelers, lawn care companies, pool builders and other home service businesses in Chicago and the suburbs, plus multi-location brands anywhere in the US.
I am a good fit if you want more calls for the jobs you like doing and you will ask happy customers for reviews. I am a poor fit if you want to rank in 40 towns next month from one address.
